Our Wedding

Anyone travelling in or out via Athens is in for a treat - although it's not a classically beautiful city, it has amazing culture, food and nightlife.

Getting into the cityIf you fly into the main Athens airport, taxis and Ubers have a set price into the city (though they may ask you for a few euros to pay the toll on the motorway). We usually just take the metro though - cross the road outside the airport and then tap your phone to enter the station. Go to the platform saying the trains are for "Δημ Θέατρο". For the city it's worth downloading Share now - a cheaper Uber alternative for yellow cabs.

Where to stay:Whenever we go to Athens we stay in a neighbourhood called Kolonaki, which is just below the iconic Lycabettus Hill, which provides great views over the city. This is an upscale and relatively quiet neighborhood, slightly off the tourist track, with nice restaurants and bars. The trade-off is it's about 20 mins walk, or a short (5 mins) metro ride into the centre.If you want to stay nearer the action (and the acropolis) choose Plaka for classic, walkable history and picturesque streets, or Monastiraki or Psiri for lively nightlife and more budget options. If you want a fancy hotel, we would always put ministers in The Grand Bretagne.You could also consider Exarchia, which is a trendy and more bohemian neighborhood with great outdoor cafes and bars, cheap street food and abundant street art. It has a student/anarchist culture (including regular demonstrations). I would avoid the Omonoia neighbourhood.

What to do- sunset or sunrise at the acropolis (worth a guided tour in my opinion) - beat the heat and better views- watch a movie at one of the many outdoor cinemas in the city- go dancing at our favourite salsa bar - Dos Gardenias- late night at GhostHouse Karaoke- get a freddo espresso / cappuccino ("sk- ieto" for no sugar)- try mastica (ma-stee-kah) liqueur - Cam's favourite drink! Order a glass at a restaurant and put in a few ice cubes. Our favourite places to eat and drink (but you can't really go wrong)- με Kolonaki - (me Kolonaki) Great for healthy and flavourful breakfast and smoothies- Dexamani - simple food, sat outside with great vibes- Ama Lachei - good for the greek classics- Pharaoh - trendy option for dinner so book ahead- Cookomela grill - the BEST vegan gyros ("yee-roh")- LUKUMΑΔΕΣ - satiate any late night sweet cravings with donut balls (a significant upgrade on TimBits, I promise)- National Garden cafe - cute for a coffee in the park, though don't forget your bug spray- The Clumsies and/or Baba au Rum - both multi-award winning bars with creative cocktails- Brunello - Italian- Oikeio - translating to "cosy" in greek, classic greek dishes

Guide to Athens

Tinos is accessible by ferry from Athens or Mykonos. You'll arrive in the main town, about 10 mins walk from the centre of town and from our hotel. Car rentals are available from opposite the port.We usually book through <a href="https://www.ferryhopper.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://www.ferryhopper.com/</a>We recommend getting the Flexi option in case the schedule changes.The ferry may stop at other destinations before or after Tinos so be ready to disembark quickly when you hear your stop!

Athens:Fast ferries go from Rafina. The only way to get there is by taxi, which takes about 45 mins from central Athens or 25 mins from the airport. Use the app "Freenow" instead of Uber to get a cheaper ride. Aim to arrive minimum 30 mins before - and get straight on your ferry. The shortest ferry from here is about 1.5 hours.Slower ferries go from Piraeus port - this is a much bigger and more confusing port so give yourself much more time to find the correct dock (it should say on your ticket and you can sometimes input this straight into the app if you're getting a taxi). You can also take the metro down there, which can be quicker if the traffic is bad.

Mykonos:There are direct flights to Mykonos from Luton and Gatwick on 1 October. From the island, its a short 30 minute ferry ride to Tinos.

If you're looking to extend your trip, these are our recommendations for nearby islands:The Close Neighbors (Daily connections):Mykonos (15-30 mins), Syros (15-45 mins), and Andros (40 mins) all have multiple daily sailings year-round.The Central &amp; Southern Cyclades (Daily or near-daily connections):Paros (from 1 hour 5 mins), Naxos (from 1 hour 15 mins), Ios (from 2.5 hours), and Santorini (from 3 hours).The Western Cyclades (Weekly connections):Direct routes to Kea, Kythnos, and Milos are still running, but they operate on a much lighter frequency.

Getting to Tinos

Tinos is a picturesque Greek island in the Cyclades archipelago. Known as an authentic cultural and spiritual hub, it features traditional stone villages, famous marble craftsmanship, thriving local gastronomy, and scenic beaches largely free of heavy mass tourism. Tinos and the surrounding islands are known for being very windy, though by October it is usually calmer. This means there aren't many mozzies, but the evening can be cooler so bring a light jacket.

You can hire a car for the entirety of your visit (if your accommodation has parking, though usually street parking and car parks are free), just a day, or not at all - and have a great time whatever you decide to do. As it's the end of the season we recommend pre-booking but you'll definitely be able to walk up and get a car too.

Car rental options include:<a href="https://dimitrisrentacar.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dimitris</a> is right outside the part and will bring the car down to meet you off the ferry, though prices are higher.<a href="https://tinosrental.gr/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dellatolas </a>is next door to our hotel and are happy to give lots of advice about where to go. Mid-range prices.<a href="http://koulisrentacar.gr/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Koulis </a>is the rental we used last time, they are no-frills but also no drama. They have some of the best rates in town. he dropped us to the port when we returned the car.

What to do- If you're lucky, catch dancing in the main square near Epineio restaurant- Have a quick stop at the beautiful chapel on the seafront with a secret beach: <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/cP9zyxpmGqSvMKgA6" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ιερός Ναός Τιμίου Σταυρού</a>- See pilgrims crawling up the hill to the Cathedral- Visit cute mountain villages and towns , such as Pyrgos, which has a unique marble-paved square with a centuries-old plane tree and monumental marble fountain, the Marble Craft Museum, and the Museum of Tinian Artists.- See the "lunar" landscape at Volax- Travel to village of Kampos and the neighbouring Taram pados Valley are home to most of the island's dove cotes.- Marble Sculpture or Cyanotype workshops hosted by Atelier Figges - Participants carve their own unique piece from a raw block of marble. BeachesThe south eastern corner of the island has the most sandy and easily accessible beaches. There are also many good ones accessible just walking from the main town. Agios Fokas, one of the largest and most beautiful on the island is only a few minutes from Chora and has a beach bar with water sports, restaurants, cafes, rental rooms, umbrellas and sunbeds. 2.5 km from Chora is the village of Kionia with its award-winning beach with a magnificent view of the sea and neighbouring Syros.If you want to range further, Kolimbythra on the back side of the island is a beautiful bay with a really big beach. It's also the island's 'surf spot' which tells you what you need to know about the wind. Panormos is also gorgeous, it's just a little harbour with restaurants scattered around it, and there is a beach just around the cove called Rohari which is a secret favourite. If you want a little walk to see some cool carvings cut into the rock, walk from Panormos to Kavalourko Beach.

Where to eat and drink:- Antilalos - lovely book store cafe serving homemade cakes, local beers and cheeses.- Fatto a Mano - Cam-approved gelato- Santiago - late night nightlife with music and dj- Homa - mostly vegan cafe- Thalassaki - you'll need a car to visit this one, but it was recommended by our Tinian friend - dine right on the shore- Κατώι στο Σμαρδάκιτο - idyllic village square taverna with fantastic food, but likely to be closed for the season

If you're on the island on Thursday, please join us for welcome drinks and snacks at Ma.ti bar from 1930-2200 (with an option to carry on to Santiago Bar afterwards).The bar is a 5 min walk from our hotel or port, or a 15 minute walk from the main town centre.

Wedding day timeline

Please come in whatever you're comfortable in, there are no colours or styles to prioritise or avoid. Tinos should be mild during the day (highs of 23 degrees celcius) but is known for being windy. It generally drops to around 14 degrees overnight so you might want to bring a jumper to put on in the evening. The venue has a wooden dancefloor, but the sandy/gravel pathways meaning shoes could get dusty.
